Dear members,
I’m grateful for your support in making the Ikebana International Los Angeles Chapter #4 Katen flower exhibition a huge success after a three-year hiatus. I want to express my sincere gratitude for the cooperation of many people. Without you this event would not be possible. Thank you:
all our members and friends who exhibited their amazing Ikebana works of art
our dedicated board: Cynthia, Leonard and Michiyo
all our IILA members & volunteers who hosted the country sale, mini-ikebana workshop, and greeted visitors
to the Ohara Ikebana School for hosting this year's demonstration on Sunday
everyone who took and shared their beautiful photographs
the participants who explained their work
to Roy Kunisaki and Osamu Ojima for being vendors at the pottery sale
The Los Angeles County Arboretum staff & volunteers
The Katen was a glorious way to celebrate the commencement of Spring. Enjoy a recap below. If you missed it we have plenty of photos for you to enjoy. There is also a video of the Ohara demonstration that got me excited about the upcoming Ohara Workshop by Satsuki Palter Sensei on Sunday, April 24, 2022 and our remaining programming for the year.
I had the great pleasure of going to two Ikebana events. Sangetsu Flower Show, "Joyful Flowers" at The Flower Fields in Carlsbad, California and the Common Ground Exhibition: A Collaboration with Adam Silverman & Sogetsu LA at the Japanese Community Cultural Center in Little Tokyo. The latter is going until April 10 so if you get a chance I highly recommend it. If your group or school has an Ikebana event let me know by sending details to info@ikebanalosangeles.org so we can share it with our members.
We are transitioning our email delivery method so it maintains cohesion after my tenure. Please add info@ikebanalosangeles.org to your email contact list so you keep getting updates from Ikebana International Los Angeles Chapter #4. I love celebrating our friendship through flowers, so let's continue to stay in touch and I look forward to spending time with you at our next workshop.
Sincerely,
Fukuyo
President

2022 Katen Recap
It was a joy gathering with everyone at the annual Katen this year. We had a well attended exhibition with lots of great feedback from participants who enjoyed the beautiful floral artworks.
Setup
Setting up the exhibition on Friday, March 18, 2022 was a lovely day filled with positive energy that allowed members to make their arrangements together harmoniously.
You can see photos from the setup on our Facebook page here >>
Also watch this video compilation as well on youtube
Exhibition
Forty-nine people exhibited their Ikebana arrangements over the March 19 and March 20 weekend. There were several group works and large masterpieces to draw the eye around the room. Arboretum visitors who came to the exhibition enjoyed browsing and many participated in making and taking home a mini-ikebana arrangement.
You can also download print quality photos by Arboretum volunteer Maryln Woo from flickr here >>
Ohara Demonstration
The demonstration by Ohara Ikebana School of Los Angeles was held on Sunday, March 20, 2023. The room was filled with over 100 people. Thank you Satsuki Palter, Katey Ho, Theresa Lin, and Mayumi Onami for sharing the unique qualities of Ohara Ikebana and for making arrangements that celebrated the beauty of spring.
Country Store
This year the Country Store was dedicated to our beloved friend Tiiu. Thank you to Cynthia Conant for assembling all the items and donating $2,000 in Tiiu Parli Harunk’s memory. Thank you, also, to Jose Salcedo and Armando Argandona who moved all of Tiiu’s vases, containers, kenzans, II magazines and calendars from Cynthia’s home to the Arboretum. If you are new to our Chapter you can read about Tiiu in this remembrance >>
Ikebana Photo Celebration
Thank you Leonard Brinkers for creating the video streaming in the background of the exhibition throughout the weekend. This film was created for our annual Luncheon. We were lucky to have the opportunity to share this compilation of past Ikebana International Los Angeles, Chapter #4 Katens and events. Enjoy it here.
Katen Feedback
Our flower exhibition will continue every year with lots of support from our members and volunteers. The IILA board wants to hear from you. Let us know what you think we should start, stop and continue doing at next year's Katen by emailing us at info@ikebanalosangeles.org.
The last day of the Katen was the first day of spring. It is the season when many flowers are in full bloom. Be inspired by the Katen arrangements and continue to use these flowers in your arrangements while you still can.
