Ikenobo Workshop by Fukuyo Tanaka

The third meeting of the year was held on Sunday, November 21, 2021in the Palm Room of the Arboretum in Arcadia. I had the privilege to be the instructor on behalf of Ikenobo LA branch. The basics of shoka shofutai design was introduced at the workshop. The four key principles include:

  1. stem insertion location

  2. height of elements

  3. flower facing direction

  4. clarity of water’s edge

By following these guidelines, anyone can complete a basic shoka shofutai arrangement. The form was demonstrated using three, five, seven, and nine stems of chrysanthemum. Participants were encouraged to make an Ikebana that matched the example as closely as possible. Corrections were made according to the four points outlined. I was relieved that everyone was satisfied with their arrangement, some of which are included here for your enjoyment. -- Fukuyo Tanaka
